Human Rights Commission: "Kakao's Principles for Addressing 'Online Hate' Are a Model Case"
[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] The National Human Rights Commission of Korea welcomed Kakao's principles for responding to hate speech announced on the 13th, stating that it is "a model case that marks a milestone in addressing online hate speech."
On the 14th, the Human Rights Commission said in a statement, "Since the second half of last year, we have conducted research with Kakao and the Korean Association for Media and Law to establish the concept of hate speech and find ways for online self-regulation." It added, "Based on the results of this joint research, we once again welcome Kakao's declaration of fundamental principles for responding to hate speech." It further stated, "We hope that various online portals and communities will also participate in establishing self-regulatory norms to create a culture that does not tolerate hate speech."
On the previous day, Kakao announced "Kakao's Principles for Eradicating Hate Speech," declaring that it would take a strong stance against acts that discriminate against, exclude, or promote prejudice against specific targets based on human identity factors.
