COVID-19 'Jipkok' Drives TV Demand to Record High... Expected to Surpass 223 Million Units This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] As the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has increased the amount of time spent at home, including working from home, there is a forecast that TV demand will reach an all-time high this year.
Market research firm TrendForce announced on the 11th that it expects global TV shipments this year to increase by 2.8% from last year to 223 million units.
In particular, TrendForce mentioned the possibility of major sporting events such as the Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic last year, being held this year, and predicted that "global TV demand could reach an all-time high."
In early last year, when COVID-19 first broke out, TV shipments declined due to reduced economic activities in various countries but rebounded from April last year.
Some TV companies postponed their shipment schedules planned for the fourth quarter of last year to this year, citing semiconductor component shortages, resulting in last year's shipments recording 217 million units, a 0.3% decrease from the previous year.
