Operation of Gangdong-gu Care SOS Center
Starting This Year, Dedicated Managers Assigned and Care Services Expanded
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) has been operating the Care SOS Center since August 2020 to support residents in urgent need of care due to sudden illness or accidents.
Last year, the district provided a total of 1,218 services over five months to 596 people, contributing to closing the care gap caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
In particular, satisfaction was high for the home-visit care services (temporary home care) where caregivers or activity support workers visit residents' homes, and the meal delivery service (meal support) for residents who are unable to prepare meals on their own.
Since 2021, care managers composed of two public officials?a social welfare officer and a nursing officer?have been assigned to all 17 community service centers. When care services are requested, they visit within at least 72 hours, coordinate with service providers, and conduct follow-up management.
In addition to the existing four main services (▲temporary home care ▲short-term facility care ▲meal support ▲information counseling), four more services have been added: ▲accompaniment support (assistance with essential outings such as hospital visits) ▲housing convenience (simple repairs and installations within the home) ▲welfare checks (emotional support in daily life) ▲health support (health consultations and welfare management), providing a total of eight services.
Applications and consultations can be made at the community service center in the resident’s district.

Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “The Care SOS Center has become a ray of hope for vulnerable groups by addressing care needs during the care gap caused by the prolonged suspension of face-to-face services due to COVID-19. As the number of neighbors needing help has increased due to COVID-19, we will gradually expand care services.”
