BTS Wins Album Daesang at Golden Disc Awards for 4 Consecutive Years
Fifth Grand Prize Overall... Four Awards Including Main Prize in Music Category
"I Will Return This Year with Great Music and Performances"
The group BTS won the grand prize in the album category at the Golden Disc Awards for the fourth consecutive year.
They received the grand prize trophy for their fourth studio album, 'Map of the Soul: 7,' at the 35th ceremony broadcast on JTBC on the 10th. Following their sweep of the album and digital song categories last year, this marked their fifth overall honor. They also won four awards, including the main prize in the digital song category for their English single "Dynamite," released last August. Starting with the Rookie of the Year award in 2014, they have won the main prize for seven consecutive years.
Leader RM said in his acceptance speech, "We will be BTS who believe in positivity and hope and move forward. We will come back this year with great music and performances." Jimin promised fans, "I will strive to become a good singer who can convey my heart to you with a better voice." Suga, who had to pause activities due to shoulder surgery, said, "I hope the day comes soon when we can perform with 'Map of the Soul: 7.'"
'Map of the Soul: 7' was released in February last year and sold over 4.36 million copies domestically. It was also the best-selling physical album in the United States last year, with 646,000 copies sold. It topped the Billboard main album chart in its first week, accelerating BTS's localization in the U.S. BTS also sold 252,000 copies in the U.S. with their mini-album 'BE.' They ranked second in total album sales last year with 1.54 million copies, following Taylor Swift (1.94 million). Domestically, the two albums sold a total of 9.16 million copies. Thanks to this, total domestic album sales last year surpassed 40 million copies (40.26 million), about 1.6 times more than the 24.54 million copies sold in 2019.
BTS also received the main prize and the Curaprox Golden Disc Popularity Award, which is decided by fan votes. They also won the main prize at the digital song category ceremony held the day before. Other main prize winners in the album category include SEVENTEEN, GOT7, BLACKPINK, NCT, NCT 127, Baekhyun, EXO, TWICE, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. Rookie awards went to ENHYPEN, TREASURE, and Kim Hojoong, respectively.
