Ki U-man, Park Won-young, and Kim Ik-jung were militia members from the Honam region in 1896, who opposed the assassination of Empress Myeongseong and the short hair decree.
They inherited the academic lineage of the Confucian scholar from the Honam region, Nosa Ki Jeong-jin, and refused domestic political interference by foreign powers such as Japan. They raised militias in Jangseong and Naju to protect the king and actively fought.

The government honored their meritorious deeds by posthumously awarding Ki U-man the Order of Independence Merit in 1980, Park Won-young the Order of Patriotism Merit in 1995, and Kim Ik-jung the Order of Patriotism Merit in 1990.
