[Asia Economy, reporter Lim Chunhan] On December 11, Representative Chung Jinseok of the People Power Party criticized the Ministry of Justice’s disciplinary committee for Prosecutor General Yoon Seokyoul, stating, “People who suit Minister Choo Mi-ae’s preferences are participating as judges. Where else can you find such an extreme example of unfairness?” He added, “This is no different from a North Korean people's court or the trials presided over by magistrates in the Joseon Dynasty.”
During an appearance on CBS Radio’s “Kim Hyunjung’s News Show” that day, Representative Chung said, “They say the disciplinary committee has been postponed to the 15th, but it’s nothing more than a formality. Everything is proceeding exactly according to a prearranged scenario,” and added, “It will result in either suspension or dismissal.”
Regarding the possibility of Prosecutor General Yoon entering politics, Representative Chung commented, “He has climbed onto the tiger’s back called the people. It will be difficult for him to get off on his own,” and continued, “The public will not let him live as a private citizen or a free spirit.”
On the remark by Joo Hoeyoung, the People Power Party’s floor leader, that “Prosecutor General Yoon should declare that he will not enter politics,” Representative Chung said, “I don’t think it’s something to interfere with, as it’s a matter of personal choice,” and added, “Whether Prosecutor General Yoon runs for president or for mayor of Seoul, the decision belongs to the people.”
Regarding the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) Act, Representative Chung stated, “The opposition’s veto power is the minimum safeguard for ensuring the political neutrality and investigative independence of the CIO,” and pointed out, “Isn’t this dictatorship? This is what is called majority rule dictatorship.”
On the comment by Judiciary Committee Chairman Yoon Hojoong that some have “sucked the honey of dictatorship all their lives,” Representative Chung responded, “That expression was really unpleasant to hear,” and sharply criticized, “There are plenty of people who spent two or three years in student activism, entered politics, and have been enjoying the benefits for 20 years.”
