View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, commented on President Moon Jae-in’s cabinet reshuffle on the 7th, saying, “A reshuffle that changes only the minor positions while excluding key posts like the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister is a mockery of the people,” and added, “We demand a comprehensive reshuffle that can calm the public’s anger and offer hope to the people.”
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that day, Ahn said, “We urge the immediate dismissal of Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae, who has provoked public anger, and the cancellation of the nomination of the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport candidate, whose appointment holds no meaningful significance,” and criticized, “The President himself must explain the appointment of his closest aide, who lacks expertise in the relevant field, as Minister of the Interior and Safety, the department responsible for elections, just before the by-elections.”
He continued, “This reshuffle is, in short, an ‘arson reshuffle’ that pours fuel on the fire of public sentiment. I don’t understand why the reshuffle was made at all,” and pointed out, “In particular, the nominee for Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is the epitome of obstinacy and arrogance, ignoring both the opposition party and the people. If this is the kind of appointment, the twenty-fifth real estate policy will be a total failure. It would be better to keep Minister Kim Hyun-mi in office to avoid further angering the public.”
He added, “Why was the Justice Minister, the top priority for a reshuffle that burdens the administration and angers the people, left out? Is it because someone is needed to get their hands dirty until the end? Or is the lame-duck syndrome of the administration so severe that the Justice Minister has already escaped the President’s control?” He said, “I cannot understand why they continue to protect and embrace someone the majority of the people want out. If they persist in defying the natural order and insist on arrogance and self-righteousness, the future of the Moon Jae-in administration will inevitably be like falling leaves blown by the Choo Mi-ae wind.”
Ahn proposed, “On this occasion, I suggest forming a grand neutral cabinet to overcome the unprecedented national crisis of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the economic crisis,” and stated, “Appoint someone who can strongly admit that the current real estate policies are wrong as Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Appoint a Justice Minister who will carry out genuine prosecution reform that does not target Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl and real prosecutors, but makes even ordinary citizens unafraid to visit the prosecution office.”
