First Step of Urban Regeneration New Deal Project in Daehak-dong, Gwanak-gu
Selection of New Hope Sites for Urban Regeneration Projects, Laying the Groundwork for New Deal Project Selection... Promotion, Education, and Small-Scale Residential Environment Improvement through Activation of Resident Communities and Opinion Gathering
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The area around Daehak-dong in Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has been selected as a new Hope Zone project site under the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s urban regeneration initiative.
The ‘Hope Zone project’ is a program that strengthens the capabilities of local residents, who are the main agents of urban regeneration, before the start of the urban regeneration project. It aims to build consensus on local issues through urban regeneration-related promotion, education, and small-scale environmental improvements.
On November 5, the district announced that the resident group ‘Daehak-dong Nokdu Street Guardians’ applied for the Hope Zone project. After on-site inspections by Seoul city expert evaluators and resident presentation assessments, the group was selected based on a comprehensive evaluation of residents’ implementation capabilities, the effectiveness and ripple effects of urban regeneration, and the district’s systematic vision and goals for urban regeneration.
In particular, Daehak-dong received high marks for its mixed characteristics of aging residential areas and commercial districts, the potential for expansion of existing resident groups, and the usability of key spaces, indicating strong potential for various follow-up project developments.
The project period is from December 2020 to November 2021.
The main projects include ▲ revitalization of the resident community ▲ small-scale residential environment improvement projects ▲ encouraging participation of youth and single-person households in the area ▲ investigation of local humanities, social, historical, and cultural resources and discovery of new local culture, with support of up to 180 million KRW.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “With the selection for the urban regeneration Hope Zone project, we will be able to preserve the local identity of Daehak-dong Nokdu Street and improve the aging residential environment. We will do our best to ensure that Daehak-dong can continue into an urban regeneration New Deal project through successful project implementation based on resident communication and participation.”
