[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will hold the 'Royal Court and Yangban Traditional Food Festival' online starting from the 24th.
Started in 2004 to widely promote and preserve our precious Korean traditional food culture, this festival is celebrating its 14th year this year. Due to COVID-19 prevention measures, it has been planned as a safe ontact festival.
The festival can be viewed through various district office SNS channels such as the Jongno TV website and YouTube.
This year's theme is ‘Late-night Snacks of the Royal Court and Yangban Families,’ focusing on the late-night snack table settings and food culture of the late Joseon royal court and yangban families.
For royal court late-night snacks, the festival features ▲ ‘Jeongol,’ a late-night meal reflecting King Jeongjo’s filial piety toward his father Crown Prince Sado ▲ ‘Naengmyeon,’ a cold noodle dish that comforted King Gojong during sleepless nights worrying about Joseon’s fate ▲ ‘Gukbap,’ a hearty soup rice dish for the royal concubines’ late-night meal. For yangban family late-night snacks, it showcases ▲ ‘Chanhap,’ a lunchbox brought by the family elders during official visits.
Additionally, the video features Han Bok-ryeo, a holder of royal court cuisine skills and director of the Royal Court Food Research Institute, and announcer So Seul-ji, who help deepen understanding of the food culture.
The beautiful hanok library ‘Cheongun Literature Library,’ located at the foot of Inwangsan Mountain in Jongno, displays the late Joseon royal court and yangban late-night snack table settings, along with interesting stories related to the food culture.
