Doosan Heavy Industries Signs Korea's First 'Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project' Agreement
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, transforming into an eco-friendly energy company, is participating in Korea's first full-cycle demonstration project for green hydrogen utilizing wind power.
On the 25th, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction announced that it signed a project agreement to promote the "Green Hydrogen Production, Storage, and Utilization Demonstration Project," led by Jeju Energy Corporation and supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute.
Hydrogen produced by splitting water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind power emits no environmental pollutants like carbon dioxide throughout the hydrogen production cycle, thus called "green hydrogen." The government plans to supply 30% of the 5.26 million tons of hydrogen needed by 2040 with green hydrogen.
The agreement involves 10 institutions and companies, including Jeju Provincial Government, Korea Midland Power, and Korea Gas Corporation. Through this agreement, each participating organization will develop and demonstrate technologies for the full cycle of green hydrogen?from production using electricity generated by wind power to storage, transportation, and utilization?without any carbon emissions.
The demonstration project will be carried out at the Dongbok and Bukchon wind farms owned by Jeju Energy Corporation. At this site, systems will be established including ▲a hydrogen production system that uses 3 MW of electricity generated by wind power to produce about 600 kg of hydrogen per day ▲a system for compressing and storing the produced hydrogen ▲a system to store unused electricity in a battery with a capacity of 2 MWh.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction will be responsible for the integrated design and supervision of the entire hydrogen plant, including hydrogen production, compression, and storage, as well as the development of the energy management system (EMS). The total project cost is approximately 20 billion KRW, with a project period until December 2022. The hydrogen produced here will be used as fuel for hydrogen buses planned to be introduced in Jeju.
Song Yong-jin, Head of Strategy and Innovation Division at Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, said, "With the government recently approving the introduction of the Hydrogen Power Obligation System (HPS), domestic demand for hydrogen is expected to expand rapidly. We plan to continuously foster eco-friendly energy businesses such as hydrogen, wind, and hydropower, and take the lead in revitalizing the related industrial ecosystem."
