[Asia Economy International Department Reporter] Heads of major European Union (EU) institutions on the 7th (local time) collectively expressed their congratulations on the news that Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, won the U.S. presidential election, and stated that they are ready to strengthen cooperation with the United States.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, the EU's executive branch, congratulated Biden's victory in a statement on the day and said, "I look forward to meeting as soon as possible," adding, "The European Commission is ready to strengthen cooperation with the new administration and Congress to address the urgent challenges we face."
She added that they must fight the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social impacts, jointly tackle climate change, promote digital transformation, strengthen common security, and reform the rules-based multilateral system.
President von der Leyen also emphasized that "the EU and the United States are friends and allies, and our citizens share the deepest bonds," noting that both sides have built an unprecedented transatlantic partnership based on a rules-based international order.
Charles Michel, President of the European Council, also sent congratulations via Twitter, stating, "The EU is ready to step up for a strong transatlantic partnership," and added, "COVID-19, multilateralism, climate change, and international trade are some of the challenges Europe hopes to solve together."
Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, responsible for the EU's foreign policy, tweeted, "A good day for the United States and Europe," and said, "We look forward to working with the new administration to rebuild our partnership."
David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, also wrote on Twitter, "The world needs a strong relationship between Europe and the United States," adding, "We look forward to cooperating to fight COVID-19, climate change, and address growing inequality."
Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), also expressed a welcoming statement, saying he knows that Biden is "a strong supporter of NATO and the transatlantic relationship," and added, "I look forward to working very closely to further strengthen the bonds between North America and Europe."
