5·18 Archive to Host May Youth Reexamination Academic Conference on the 3rd
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The May 18 Democratic Movement Archives announced on the 1st that it will hold an academic conference to reexamine the May youth on the 3rd, the Student Independence Movement Memorial Day, at the May 18 Archives Multipurpose Auditorium in the afternoon.
Under the theme "May, Meeting the Youth of That Day," this academic conference was planned to reexamine the participation and role of youth in the May 18 Democratic Movement, which has not been properly addressed until now.
First, Lecturer Jeong Hogi (Graduate School of NGO, Chonnam National University) will give a presentation titled "May 18 Discourse Composed from the Perspective of High School Students," which contains the analysis and organization of essays written by Seoksan High School students in 1981.
This is the first time that the entire records will be disclosed and presented.
Next, Lecturer Kang Namjin (PhD candidate, Department of Social Education, Chonnam National University) will present on the topic "Youth Participation in the May 18 Democratic Movement." He will connect youth participation from the 1970s to the democratization movement in the Gwangju area and broadly discuss how youth participation was possible during the May 18 Uprising.
During the academic conference, cases of high school students' participation in the May 18 Democratic Movement in 1980 will also be presented.
Six students who were enrolled at Seoksan High School, Geumho High School, Daedong High School, Gwangju Jeil High School, Gwangju Girls' High School, and Gwangju Seoseok High School at the time will directly present the contents they witnessed, participated in, and recorded.
