"Why No Paycheck?" ... 50s Employee Sets Fire at Gyeongju Ship Parts Factory
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] At around 9:05 PM on October 31, a fire suspected to be arson broke out at a ship parts manufacturing factory in Oedong-eup, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongbuk Province.
The fire burned one factory building and an office building, damaging an area of 250㎡, causing property damage estimated at 30 million KRW (according to the fire station), and was completely extinguished after about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
The police have arrested and are investigating a factory employee in his 50s, Mr. A, on suspicion of arson of a general building at the factory. It is reported that Mr. A surrendered to the police after the fire occurred.
The police secured a statement from Mr. A saying, "I set the fire out of dissatisfaction with wage arrears," and are investigating the details of the crime and the exact extent of the damage.
