The group BTS was selected as the Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards for the fourth consecutive year. The Top Social Artist award is given based on the Billboard ‘Social 50’ chart rankings, which measure online influence, as well as fan voting. This year, EXO, GOT7, Billie Eilish, and Ariana Grande were also nominated.
BTS was announced as the winner in this category at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards held on the 14th (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, USA. They have won this award every year since 2017. This year, their overwhelming online influence made them the clear favorite. Member J-Hope expressed his gratitude via video, saying, “Thank you to ARMY (BTS fans) for giving us this award for four consecutive years.” Leader RM said, “This award is vivid proof that no matter where we are, we and ARMY are closely connected.”
BTS was also nominated in the ‘Top Duo/Group’ category but did not win. The trophy went to the Jonas Brothers. Last year, BTS was the first Korean artist to win in this category.
At the ceremony, BTS performed a jazz-style rearrangement of “Dynamite.” They used the vast space of Incheon International Airport’s terminal as their stage, delivering a spectacular performance. In the latter part of the performance, scenes of the interior of Incheon Airport terminal, departure boards showing major world cities as destinations, and airplanes appeared. Their agency, Big Hit Entertainment, explained, “This was planned with the hope that the world, which has been disconnected due to the spread of COVID-19, will be reconnected.”
The highest honor, ‘Top Artist,’ was awarded to singer-songwriter Post Malone, who performed “Circles.” He also won trophies in categories including ‘Top Male Artist’ and ‘Top Billboard 200 Artist,’ collecting nine trophies in total. Billie Eilish won in categories such as ‘Top Billboard 200 Album,’ ‘Top Female Artist,’ and ‘Top New Artist,’ while Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus took home the ‘Top Hot 100 Song’ award.
