US Court to Decide on TikTok Ban on the 27th
Hearing on Commerce Department's Ban on Downloads
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. has decided to hold a hearing regarding the Commerce Department's order banning the download of the Chinese video application TikTok in the United States.
Local U.S. media reported on the 25th (local time) that the federal court is scheduled to decide on the 27th whether to enforce the TikTok usage ban pushed by the U.S. administration.
TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, filed an injunction request with the court on the 23rd to halt the TikTok ban. The U.S. Department of Justice submitted an opposing opinion to the court on the same day.
The U.S. Commerce Department extended the deadline for the TikTok download ban in the U.S. from the 20th to the 27th by one week, as negotiations for U.S. companies to acquire TikTok showed some progress.
ByteDance is negotiating acquisition deals with Walmart and Oracle, but tensions continue over control rights and other issues.
Earlier, the Trump administration raised concerns on August 1 that the personal information of 100 million TikTok users could be transferred to the Chinese Communist Party.
