Gwangju Nam-gu to Build 120-Space Parking Building at Mudeung Market
32 Billion KRW Including National and City Funds Invested... Scheduled for Completion Around June 2023
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 24th that Mudeung Market has been selected as the project target area in the ‘2021 Traditional Market Parking Environment Improvement Project’ contest hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and that a state-of-the-art two-story above-ground parking building will be constructed by June 2023 with a project budget of 3.2 billion KRW.
Currently, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups supports national funding by reviewing the necessity and feasibility of projects when local governments intend to install public parking lots with more than 50 parking spaces near traditional markets to revitalize them through nationwide contests.
The reason Nam-gu applied for Mudeung Market as the project target area is that following the demolition of Baegun Overpass, facilities such as a street food zone and a bridge connecting the previously disconnected Green Road Park have been created, leading to an increase in foot traffic around Baegun Square and an expected rise in customer inflow to the nearby Mudeung Market.
Additionally, since a high-rise apartment complex with about 600 households is under construction near Mudeung Market, it is anticipated that the number of visitors to the traditional market will increase after residents move in.
Accordingly, Nam-gu plans to officially promote the Mudeung Market parking building construction project starting with the detailed design service for the new parking building from January next year.
The site for the parking building is the current public parking lot located directly behind Mudeung Market.
Nam-gu plans to build a three-level parking building with two floors above ground here, with each floor expected to accommodate about 40 vehicles.
To ensure quick parking fee settlement and convenience for vehicle entry and exit, an unmanned payment system will also be established.
The construction of the Mudeung Market parking building is expected to be completed by June 2023.
