As the government designated the damage areas in Gijang-gun, which were severely damaged by Typhoon Maysak (No. 9) and Typhoon Haishen (No. 10), as special disaster zones, rapid recovery work and budget support will follow.
The Central Disaster Damage Joint Investigation Team of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted a joint investigation by visiting the typhoon-damaged areas directly for five days from September 15 to 19.
As a result, five cities and 19 eup, myeon, and dong, including Gijang-eup and Ilgwang-myeon in Gijang-gun, were declared special disaster zones on this day.
The declaration of a special disaster zone at the eup and myeon level is possible only when two criteria are both met: the total damage scale of the county is over 4.2 billion KRW, and the damage scale of the eup or myeon is 1.05 billion KRW.
The total damage scale of Typhoon Maysak (No. 9) and Typhoon Haishen (No. 10) submitted by Gijang-gun to the government is about 7.1 billion KRW, and the damage scale of Gijang-eup and Ilgwang-myeon is 4 billion KRW and 1.5 billion KRW respectively, meeting both criteria and thus declared special disaster zones this time.
When disasters such as typhoons or heavy rains occur, the recovery cost is generally much higher than the disaster damage amount.
Areas declared as special disaster zones receive national treasury support for the local government’s share of recovery costs based on the amount needed for recovery, not just the damage amount.
With Gijang-eup and Ilgwang-myeon in Gijang-gun declared special disaster zones, 5.3 billion KRW out of the 10 billion KRW typhoon damage recovery cost in Gijang-gun is expected to be supported by national funds.
Monetary support is provided to the bereaved families of those who died or went missing due to natural disasters and to the injured, along with disaster relief funds for the livelihood stabilization of affected residents, and administrative, financial, and medical costs necessary for recovery are also paid.
Previously, Gijang-gun Mayor Oh Gyu-seok appealed through several statements urging the designation of special disaster zones and meetings with the Office for Government Policy Coordination.
