Samsung Electronics Wearable Walking Assistance Robot, First International Standard Certification
'GEMS Hip' Unveiled at 'CES 2019', Meets International Standards and Proves Safety
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Samsung Electronics announced on the 21st that its self-developed wearable walking assist robot 'GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivating System) Hip' has received the international standard 'ISO 13482' certification from the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement.
'ISO 13482' is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2014 to ensure the safety of three types of personal service robots: mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots, and personal transportation robots.
This is the first time a domestic company has obtained the 'ISO 13482' certification.
On the same day, Samsung Electronics held an 'ISO 13482' certification ceremony at the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement in Daegu, attended by Director Moon Jeon-il and Executive Director Kang Seongcheol, head of Samsung Research Robot Center.
'GEMS' is a wearable walking assist robot based on robotics technology that helps improve walking and motor functions, enabling more efficient and stable walking in daily life. It was first unveiled at CES 2019.
'GEMS' can be worn on the hip, knee, or ankle according to user needs to reduce the load on major muscles involved in walking. There are three types: 'GEMS Hip,' 'GEMS Knee,' and 'GEMS Ankle.'
The 'GEMS Hip,' which received certification this time, is a physical assistant robot worn on the hip that assists about 24% of the force during walking and increases walking speed by 14%.
Unlike industrial robots, personal service robots are used alongside people in daily life, making safety a top priority. Through this certification, Samsung Electronics has demonstrated the safety and technological capabilities of personal service robots that meet international standards.
'GEMS Hip' also received certification for 'ISO 13849,' a functional safety standard for control systems that ensure motors operate safely.
Director Moon said, "Securing safety is very important to expand the scope of the service robot market," and added, "Starting with this certification, we expect service robots that meet strict international standards to expand domestically."
Executive Director Kang stated, "This certification is significant as it combines Samsung Electronics' wearable robot technology with top-level quality management capabilities, laying the foundation for securing safety essential for robot commercialization," and added, "We will contribute to raising consumers' quality of life by applying differentiated safety technologies to various robot product lineups in the future."
