Gwangyang-si, Pedestrian Priority Road Established in Yi Sun-sin Bridge Food Town
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Gwangyang City announced on the 18th that it will promote the ‘Pedestrian Priority Road Construction Project’ for two months starting next month to ensure that pedestrians can use the area around the Yi Sun-sin Bridge Food Town safely and conveniently.
This project is part of the Regional Traffic Safety Environment Improvement Project led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, with a total budget of 430 million KRW including 200 million KRW in national funds and city funds. Currently, the detailed design and review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety have been completed, and construction preparations are underway.
The area around Yi Sun-sin Bridge Food Town has frequent traffic accidents on side roads without clear separation between sidewalks and roadways. From 2016 to 2018, there were 45 pedestrian traffic accident casualties. In response, since April last year, a 30 km/h speed limit has been designated and enforced in the residential area.
The main contents include reducing traffic volume and encouraging low-speed driving by designing five routes totaling 655 meters with pedestrian-vehicle friendly colored pavement. Traffic calming facilities such as raised crosswalks at entrances to reduce speed, roadside deck rest areas with convenience facilities, and traffic calming installations using planted flat flower beds will be installed to create a pleasant walking environment.
