KCC: "MBN Violated Reapproval Conditions, Yonhap News TV Failed to Comply with Recommendations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) conducted a performance review for 2019 on comprehensive programming and news-specialized broadcasting channel operators. The review found that MBN violated the conditions of its re-approval, and Yonhap News TV failed to comply with recommended guidelines. Other comprehensive programming and news PP operators were found to have complied with re-approval conditions and recommendations.
On the 16th, the KCC announced these results during a briefing following the 50th Commission meeting.
According to the KCC, MBN did not implement the planned restructuring of its outside directors as part of the measures to secure management expertise, independence, and transparency submitted to the Commission during its 2017 re-approval. The KCC plans to issue a preliminary correction order to MBN and will decide on the issuance of a formal correction order after hearing MBN’s opinion.
Yonhap News TV was judged to have failed to comply with the recommendation related to securing independence from Yonhap News, which was attached during its 2017 re-approval. However, since the KCC added a condition regarding securing independence from Yonhap News when re-approving Yonhap News TV in March, no separate action was taken this time.
