Chinese Ambassador to the UN: "US Power Politics Turning the World into a Jungle Era"
US Unilateralism and Protectionism Undermine International Order
President Xi Jinping to Address UN on Necessity, Fairness, and Justice
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Zhang Jun, China's ambassador to the United Nations (UN), criticized that "the United States is undermining the international order by advocating unilateralism and protectionism."
Ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech at the '75th UN General Assembly,' Ambassador Zhang published an op-ed with this content in the Chinese state-run People's Daily.
China tends to have its officials proactively announce their positions and directions through the People's Daily ahead of major events such as the UN General Assembly.
Ambassador Zhang emphasized the role of the UN, stating, "The UN has contributed to human peace and development over the years."
He continued, "The recent international situation is seriously damaged by the United States' unilateralism and protectionism," pointing out that "multilateral cooperation in the international community is weakening due to the United States."
He said, "Humanity is facing the risk of the infectious disease COVID-19," and stressed the need for a stronger UN more than ever before.
Ambassador Zhang then mentioned the importance and necessity of multilateralism. He said, "Multilateralism is an important guarantee for the peace and development of all countries," expressing concern that "the United States' immoral unilateralism will undermine the foundation of the international multilateral mechanism."
He further emphasized that fairness and justice are the fundamental values of the UN and the legal and moral basis for the 193 member states to live together, urging efforts to prevent power politics from returning the world to a jungle era. He explained that the United States is wielding power politics without legal grounds or moral basis.
Finally, Ambassador Zhang stated, "Chinese President Xi Jinping will deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on the challenges facing humanity and the role of the UN after COVID-19," adding that "President Xi, a staunch supporter of the UN, will explain China's wisdom, plans, and contributions."
There is a high possibility that President Xi will highlight the immorality of the United States in this year's UN General Assembly speech, and the venue is expected to become a battleground between the US and China.
