Gwangju Nam-gu to Establish Crime Prevention Facilities in 6 Old Downtown Areas by Year-End
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeong-nae) announced on the 8th that it will actively promote a safety pilot zone project to prevent crime in six old downtown areas within the district, including Baegun 2-dong, Bangnim 1-dong, Bongseon 1-dong, Wolsan 4-dong, and Juwol 1 and 2-dong, with a project cost of 270 million KRW, aiming to complete it by the end of the year.
The locations where safety infrastructure will be established include the area near Seogwang Middle School in Baegun 2-dong, surrounding one-room apartments and residential areas; residential areas around Myeongji Mansion in Bangnim 1-dong; the area near Eunseong Church in Bongseon 1-dong; the Nambu apartment complex area in Wolsan 4-dong; one-room apartments and residential areas near Pureungil Library in Juwol 1-dong; and the densely populated residential area behind Mudeung Market in Juwol 2-dong.
The facilities to be installed in the six old downtown areas include CCTV, smart lighting sheets that emit light in dark places, emergency bells, convex mirrors, security lights, and logo projectors.
Nam-gu especially plans to install logo projectors that brightly illuminate dark alleys with LED lights, functioning like street lamps, to ensure the safety of women who are vulnerable to becoming crime targets.
The safety pilot zone project is expected to proceed in earnest starting with CCTV installation construction around late this month.
A Nam-gu official stated, “The areas where safety infrastructure is being established are commonly located in alleys where crimes are easily committed, densely populated with one-room apartments and detached houses. Once crime prevention infrastructure is built, crimes targeting socially vulnerable groups such as women and the elderly are expected to decrease significantly.”
