Mapo-gu Sangam-dong's New Street Named 'Haneul Media-gil'
The 800m pedestrian-priority road section created last year in the old Sanggam-dong area has been officially named "Haneul Media-gil" through a recent naming contest.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) recently selected the name of the pedestrian-priority road created last November to improve the walking environment in the old district of Sangam-dong as ‘Haneul Media-gil’.
In August, the district received a total of about 230 name submissions from 142 citizens through the Sangam-dong pedestrian-priority road naming contest, and recently, the Sangam-dong Residents’ Autonomy Committee finalized ‘Haneul Media-gil’ (Kim Minkyeong) as the new street name.
Kim Jonghak, chairman of the Sangam-dong Residents’ Autonomy Committee who judged the naming contest, explained the selection background, saying, “Haneul Media-gil is a name that well expresses the image of Sangam-dong where nature and media are fused.”
The old district street of Sangam-dong, newly named Haneul Media-gil, began to change last year when the district carried out a pedestrian environment improvement project over a total area of 55,721㎡ around Digital Media City Station Exit 9 and Sangam-dong Community Center.
The total 800m section was reborn as a pedestrian-priority road centered on people, with road repaving, civil engineering works, anti-slip pavement, vehicle speed limit set to 30km/h, installation of raised intersections, maintenance of speed bumps, and installation of traffic safety signs and high-intensity lighting.
Haneul Media-gil is a place with many popular restaurants and cafes in Sangam-dong, with a large floating population and a developed commercial district. However, due to the prolonged impact of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the number of people has decreased and economic damage has been worsening.
Resident Kim Wonkyu, who runs a restaurant in the area, said, “I remember people taking commemorative photos on the colorful, pretty, and neat street,” and added, “I hope visitors to Haneul Media-gil will increase again as soon as possible.”
Since the launch of the 7th local government in 2018, Mapo-gu received the idea for the ‘Sangam-dong Pedestrian Environment Improvement District Project’ from residents through the policy communication platform ‘Mapo 1st Street’ as an innovative proposal (1st place in innovation award), completed the actual construction, and finalized the street name based on residents’ ideas.

Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu said, “With the cooperation of residents, we transformed the congested street into a pedestrian-friendly street, and through the naming contest, many people sent support to Sangam-dong, which has been exhausted by COVID-19,” adding, “We will do our best to revitalize the area through various non-face-to-face events in the future.”
