On the 4th, Kim posted on his Facebook, "I sincerely thank and am honored by the great interest and support given to a person with shortcomings, but I have no intention of running in next year's by-election." He added, "As a citizen, I will do my best from where I stand now to make our society a better community."
This is the first time Kim has officially announced his decision not to run. He had been mentioned as a candidate for both the Busan and Seoul mayoral by-elections next year. In particular, he was leading in public opinion polls for the Busan mayoral candidate support. Kim's declaration of not running is expected to have a considerable impact on the People Power Party's candidate selection.
Meanwhile, as reports emerged that Kim Jong-in, the emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, proposed that first-term lawmakers run in the by-elections, attention is also focused on whether these first-term lawmakers will run.
Park Soo-young, a People Power Party lawmaker representing a district in Busan, said on his Facebook, "(Regarding confirmation) no comment."
