Jeju Fire Department Activates 'Emergency Rescue Control Team' for Typhoon 'Maysak'
Expected Closest Approach to Jeju at 7 PM on the 2nd, Strengthened Readiness for Deployment Due to Strong Wind Facility Damage and Coastal Lowland Flooding
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters (Head Jung Byeongdo) announced on the 1st that it will activate the Emergency Rescue Control Team to strengthen response readiness upon the issuance of weather warnings due to the northward approach of Typhoon No. 9 ‘Maysak’.
Typhoon ‘Maysak’ is expected to come closest to Jeju around 7 p.m. on the 2nd, causing significant damage due to strong winds and rain if it maintains its current speed and path. Its path is similar to that of Typhoon ‘Maemi,’ which struck Jeju in 2003, and it is feared to be stronger than the previous typhoon ‘Bavi’.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters is thoroughly preparing for dispatch readiness by strengthening surveillance activities in areas prone to river flooding and ports/harbors within the province, and conducting 100% operational checks of flood control equipment necessary for responding to wind and water disasters.
Upon the issuance of weather warnings, the headquarters and fire stations will implement phased emergency duty, activate the Emergency Rescue Control Team, and respond proactively and preemptively to minimize damage to residents by conducting life rescue and safety measures for various facilities.
Additionally, as a sharp increase in 119 emergency calls is expected due to typhoon damage, the 119 Comprehensive Situation Room plans to operate a total of 11 units including reserve reception desks, enabling the reception of up to 120 call lines.
In particular, the headquarters will promptly post real-time typhoon comprehensive status and firefighting activity videos on its website, strengthening the "Real-Time Typhoon Information Transmission Channel" so that other regions can preemptively assess the scale of the typhoon and respond accordingly.
Head Jung Byeongdo said, “Since strong rain and wind are expected from this typhoon, residents need to be especially cautious about flooding in low-lying areas and facility safety management. As confirmed cases are rapidly increasing in our province as well, we will do our best to minimize damage through swift and appropriate responses so that residents’ suffering is not worsened by typhoon damage.”
