Indian Government: "China Violates Agreement and Provokes Military Again"
Confrontation at Pangong Lake in Ladakh
No Explanation of Military Actions
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] The Indian government recently claimed to have thwarted provocations by Chinese troops in the Ladakh border area.
According to local media such as NDTV on the 31st, the Indian Ministry of Defense stated in a press release that "on the night transitioning from the 29th to the 30th, Chinese troops engaged in provocative military actions in the Ladakh border area."
The Ministry of Defense specifically pointed to Pangong Lake, located in the eastern part of Ladakh in northern India. It is a representative disputed area in Ladakh where clashes between troops of both countries occurred in August 2017 and again in early May this year.
The Ministry of Defense said, "The Chinese troops violated agreements made through military and diplomatic channels and attempted to change the current status of the border," adding, "In response, the Indian troops prevented Chinese military activities on the southern embankment of Pangong Lake in advance." It further stated, "The Indian troops took measures such as strengthening their positions and frustrated the Chinese troops' intention to unilaterally change the actual situation on the ground." However, the Ministry did not explain the specific military actions of both sides.
The Ministry of Defense said, "The Indian troops are committed to maintaining peace and tranquility through dialogue," and "brigade-level talks between the two countries' militaries are underway to resolve this issue."
China has not yet expressed its position on this matter.

Previously, Indian and Chinese troops clashed in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh on June 15, resulting in dozens of casualties. Since then, both sides have held several military talks and agreed to withdraw troops from major disputed areas, but no progress has been made. India and China fought a war over border issues in 1962, but have yet to finalize the border, effectively treating the 3,488 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) as the de facto border.
