Trump: "Oracle is a great company... 'Goodyear Tire' is boycotted" (Summary)
Oracle Founder Classified as a Pro-Trump Figure
GoodYear Tire Holds Grudge Over Trump Political Slogan Ban
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] President Donald Trump praised Oracle as a "great company" while taking an opposing stance on Goodyear Tire by urging a boycott.
According to CNBC on the 19th (local time), President Trump said at a rally in Yuma, Arizona the previous day, "Oracle is a great company and its owner is a remarkable person," adding, "If it's Oracle, they can definitely handle TikTok well." He expressed support for Oracle in relation to the acquisition of TikTok, the Chinese social networking service (SNS) that shares short 15-second videos.
This was interpreted as President Trump stepping in to support Oracle amid a heated bidding war for TikTok's U.S. business rights, which also involved Microsoft (MS), Twitter, and others.
Larry Ellison, the founder and CEO of Oracle, is one of the rare pro-Trump figures in Silicon Valley. Considering that IT companies concentrated in Silicon Valley traditionally lean toward supporting the Democratic Party, this is unusual. In fact, Larry Ellison held a fundraising event for President Trump earlier this year at his home in California.
On the other hand, President Trump called for a boycott of Goodyear Tire. Through Twitter, he posted, "Don't buy Goodyear Tire products; buy much cheaper and better tires," urging a boycott of Goodyear tires. This came after Goodyear allowed attire bearing the slogan "Black Lives Matter" as part of diversity training but banned clothing with Trump's political slogan "Make America Great Again (MAGA)," which led to his backlash.
In response, Goodyear clarified that this was not true. In a statement, Goodyear said, "The company does not tolerate any form of workplace harassment or discrimination," and requested, "Please refrain from political activities supporting specific candidates or parties at work and from advocating anything contrary to racial justice and equality."
