[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] As the monsoon season ended, heatwave warnings were issued for most regions nationwide, and tropical nights appeared.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 17th, during the night, a hot and humid southwesterly wind flowed in along the edge of the North Pacific High, preventing temperatures from dropping, resulting in tropical nights occurring in most regions nationwide except for some inland areas.
As of 7 a.m., the lowest nighttime temperatures at major locations were Seoul 26.1°C, Suwon 25.7°C, Gangneung 28.3°C, Cheongju 26.0°C, Yeosu 25.9°C, Gwangju 25.3°C, Pohang 26.8°C, Busan 26.1°C, Daegu 25.3°C, and Jeju 27.0°C.
Currently, heatwave warnings have been issued in many areas including Daejeon, Gwangju, Busan, Daegu, as well as Gangwon Province, Chungcheong Province, Jeolla Province, Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island. Heatwave advisories have been issued for most other regions including all of Seoul.
A heatwave warning is announced when the highest perceived temperature exceeds 35°C for two or more consecutive days or when significant damage from heat is expected. The Korea Meteorological Administration stated, "Many places will see daytime temperatures rise above 33°C through this week, and the east coast of Gangwon, Chungcheong Province, southern regions, and Jeju Island will experience temperatures around 35°C, making it very hot."
