Promotion of Various Activities Such as Lunar New Year Participation and Opinion Submission from Youth Perspectives, Child and Youth Participatory Budgeting, and Child Rights Monitoring
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) took a step further to guarantee the active participation rights of youth by holding the appointment ceremony for the 12th Seongbuk-gu Youth Participation Committee on the 7th.
Marking its 12th year, the Youth Participation Committee appointed a total of 24 members as participation committee members at this event. Despite difficulties in forming the committee due to the unprecedented COVID-19 situation, the ceremony was more meaningful than ever thanks to the enthusiastic participation of the youth.
On this day, Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu personally presented appointment letters and membership cards to all members, encouraging the youth by reading a pledge together to actively engage as participation committee members. The second part of the event included recreational activities to build relationships and increase intimacy among members, easing the awkward atmosphere, and concluded with a session sharing the Youth Participation Committee’s schedule.
Operating under Article 5-2 of the Youth Basic Act (Expansion of Youth Autonomy Rights), the Youth Participation Committee plans to participate in district administration and promote practical participation rights this year through activities such as planning the Child and Youth Participation Budget System and open forums, as well as monitoring the rights of children and youth.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro stated, “The voting age was lowered to 18 in the 21st National Assembly election held in April, expanding youth suffrage, and reflecting youth opinions actively in policies is the trend of the times.” He added, “It is especially meaningful that despite the difficult situation caused by COVID-19, our youth voluntarily applied to the participation committee and we were able to hold the appointment ceremony marking the start of their activities.”
