Camping Goods Fever Burns Bright Despite Heavy Rain... Food Companies Launch 'Camping Marketing'
Camping Goods Remain Popular Despite Heavy Rain as Camping Trends Spread
Multi-Folding Carts and Meal Kits Sell Out
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Sunghye] Despite continuous heavy rains, the camping goods craze remains strong. With the thought that if you buy them now, you will use them someday, folding carts, camping boxes, and even meal kits that can create a camping atmosphere at home are selling like hotcakes.
According to Korea Yakult on the 11th, 2,000 camping sets that started selling on the online mall HiFresh from the 13th of last month were sold out by early this month, and an additional 1,000 sets are being produced and sold. The camping set features meal kits such as lamb rib steak, gambas, jjageuli, and doenjang jjigae, along with the option to choose either the 'Yakult Retro Box' or the 'Multi Folding Cart.' There is also a delivery service for camping ingredients such as samgyeopsal, pork neck, cheese dakgalbi, tteokbokki, ssam vegetables, and garlic ssamjang.
News that the multi folding cart, which gained explosive popularity at Hollys Coffee and Dunkin, was being given as a free gift caused a sell-out frenzy. A Korea Yakult official explained, "The camping set was released following recent consumer trends and was originally produced in a limited quantity of 2,000 sets, but due to the hot response, an additional 1,000 sets are being produced and sold after selling out." Currently, some of the additionally produced sets, such as the cost-effective camping set, are sold out on the homepage and cannot be purchased. The multi folding cart is also sold out.
Dongwon F&B has even released products under the camping name and is selling them. These are three types of processed meat products: 'Camping & Tong Grill Buerst,' 'Camping & Tong Grill Frank,' and 'Camping & Tong Grill Thick Bacon.' From May to July, the average monthly sales of these three products increased by 26%. From the 6th to the 13th of last month, they also held a camping market offering a 20% discount on camping product purchases.
A Dongwon F&B official said, "The Camping & Tong Grill products themselves were released several years ago, but sales have noticeably increased recently as camping has gained popularity," adding, "The Buerst and Frank products are praised for being easy to grill because they do not have casing (the thin membrane used to fill sausage ingredients)."
Dongwon F&B currently operates a separate category recommending camping products through its online mall, Dongwon Mall. Products like Dongwon Barunori Smoked Whole Meat Slices and Bulgogi Japchae Fried Rice are temporarily sold out.
Meanwhile, sales of camping foods and ingredients are soaring even on online malls handling fresh foods. According to SSG.com’s sales increase rate for camping food-related categories over the past three months (May 1 to July 30), HMR (Home Meal Replacement) increased by 70.3% year-on-year, and meal kits rose by 161.3%. Instant cup rice increased by 40.5%, and cup noodles sales grew by 76.2%. Sales of grills and wire mesh also rose by 68.6%, and iceboxes saw a 53.5% increase in sales.
