Creation of a 'Fine Dust Reduction Forest' in the New Town Area of Jeonju City
Investment of 10 Billion Won by 2022 for a 10ha Scale Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hong Jaehee] Jeonju City in Jeollabuk-do is launching a project to create fine dust reduction forests in the new town area to protect citizens' health from fine dust.
On the 4th, the city announced plans to gradually establish a total of 10 hectares of fine dust reduction forests in the areas of Hyeoksin-dong, Jang-dong, and Manseong-dong by 2022, with a total project cost of 10 billion KRW.
First, this year, the city plans to create a total of 2.5 hectares of forest in three locations that can most effectively block the southwest winds, the main wind direction carrying fine dust: the southern site of the Rural Development Administration Agricultural Engineering Department, the western site of the Rural Development Administration, and the southern site of the Agricultural and Fisheries University.
The city will maintain the existing street trees and landscaping trees on the sites as much as possible, while planting pine trees, arborvitae, zelkova trees, and Korean pine trees, which have excellent fine dust blocking effects, between the existing trees.
Additionally, broad-leaved tree species will be planted in multi-layered and complex layers, maximizing the contact surfaces of leaves, stems, and branches to enhance the fine dust reduction effect.
Next year, fine dust reduction forests will be created in Yeopsun Neighborhood Park, the eastern site of the Agricultural Engineering Department, and pedestrian-only roads within Hyeoksin City, and by 2022, some buffer green spaces along Manseongseo-ro and Ongoeul-ro will also be developed into fine dust reduction forests.
To this end, the city plans to complete the design service within this month and begin construction of the fine dust reduction forests starting in October.
The city expects that the establishment of fine dust reduction forests in Hyeoksin City and Manseong District, where large-scale apartments and public institutions are concentrated, will not only reduce fine dust but also alleviate the heat island effect, significantly improving residents' living conditions.
Prior to this, the city, together with the Jeonbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Forestry Cooperative, the design service company, has been analyzing the terrain of Hyeoksin City, the arrangement and height of buildings, wind direction and weather, and seasonal changes in wind direction.
Furthermore, through Daul Madang, a forum involving citizens, experts, and professors, the city has been considering the most effective locations and methods to block fine dust.

Song Bangwon, Director of the Ecological City Bureau, said, “We will create urban forests that can reduce fine dust to lower air pollution and also mitigate the heat island effect and heat waves. Along with this, we will do our best to continuously promote afforestation projects to build a garden city with ten million trees.”
