Jeonnam Province Implements 'Safe Beach Reservation System'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 17th that it will implement a ‘Safe Beach Reservation System’ as it expects visitors to concentrate at the ‘Clean Jeonnam’ beaches during this summer’s peak season.
Reservations can be made through the government-established ‘Sea Travel’ website or by phone, and on-site registration is also available.
Visitors can check the congestion level of each beach in advance through the reservation system, which is expected to help disperse visitors concentrated at certain beaches to less crowded ones.
Beach visitors will be allowed to enter through designated entrances after undergoing temperature checks with thermal cameras to ensure visitor safety and prevent community transmission of COVID-19.
The ‘Beach Reservation System’ is a policy proposed by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to reduce crowding at beaches and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The province judged that the originally suggested method by the Ministry of setting small sand sections would be difficult to apply just two weeks before the beach openings.
Therefore, the plan is to divide the beaches into several zones and distribute visitors according to appropriate capacity to properly adjust crowd density.
Jeonnam Province, the first in the nation to operate a safe beach reservation system, stated that this policy not only helps prevent COVID-19 infections but also serves as a policy experiment for introducing reservation systems at large recreational areas and tourist sites, including islands, to prepare for possible future infectious diseases.
In particular, the province plans to use surveys of users to identify issues and areas for improvement in this policy, aiming to foster a culture of reservation systems at beaches and other tourist destinations.

Wi Gwanghwan, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “Although the beach reservation system may cause some inconvenience to visitors and pose management challenges for local governments, beaches have high visitor density and must be well managed for the safety of visitors and local communities. We expect difficulties in operation, but we hope Jeonnam’s beaches will be promoted as beautiful places where people can visit with peace of mind.”
