Gwangju City Promotes Accuracy Improvement Project for Sewer Facilities
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 17th that it will promote the "Sewer Geographic Information System (GIS) Database (DB) Accuracy Improvement Project" to enhance the accuracy of location and depth information of sewer facilities spanning 225 km.
The Geographic Information System is a technology that establishes an integrated management foundation for underground facility information to prevent accidents and secure a rapid comprehensive response system in case of accidents. It stores information such as the depth and diameter of underground facilities.
This year, Gwangju plans to invest 1.1 billion KRW in the improvement project to update existing distance observation information measured from specific buildings to facilities by using satellite communication-based measurement information based on the Geographic Information System, thereby renewing information such as location, depth, and pipe material.
Kim Jae-sik, head of the city's Sewer Management Division, said, "The importance of spatial information on underground facilities is being highlighted due to consecutive safety accidents. We expect that the accuracy improvement project will help prevent safety accidents." He added, "We hope that contractors involved in new installations, expansions, or demolitions of sewer pipelines will conduct public surveying according to the Road Act Enforcement Regulations and update the Sewer Geographic Information System."
Meanwhile, since 2015, Gwangju has been conducting the "Sewer Underground Facility Accuracy Improvement Project" over a 2,400 km section of major roads, and by 2019, it updated information for a 1,536 km section starting with the planned route of Urban Railway Line 2 and areas with low accuracy.

Regarding the accuracy improvement project, the city requested related departments to maintain 14 suspected ground subsidence (void) areas discovered and is making efforts to prevent safety accidents by conducting detailed investigations on sewer pipelines over 20 years old within the city center.
