EU condemns North Korea's liaison office demolition: "Unacceptable... Must avoid further provocations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Regarding North Korea's demolition of the Kaesong Inter-Korean Joint Liaison Office, the European Union (EU) External Action Service (EEAS) on the 16th (local time) called the severance of inter-Korean communication channels "unacceptable" and urged to avoid further provocative actions.
In a statement issued under the name of a spokesperson, the EEAS expressed "deep regret over North Korea's recent actions that escalate tensions, destabilize the situation, and undermine diplomatic efforts on the Korean Peninsula," and stated this position. The EEAS emphasized that "any further provocative or harmful actions must be avoided."
It also said, "To avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments, it is essential for North Korea (DPRK) and South Korea to keep communication lines open," adding, "This is for building mutual trust between the two sides." The EU further stated that it will continue to encourage the resumption of ongoing diplomatic processes aimed at dialogue, building trust on a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula, and achieving lasting peace.
