Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Applies Untact Technology in Shipbuilding Sites
[Asia Economy Reporter So-yeon Park] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is proactively responding to infectious disease prevention by utilizing untact (non-face-to-face) technology in the shipbuilding field.
On the 15th, DSME announced that it successfully completed the gas trial operation of an LNG carrier by overcoming difficult conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic using its self-developed remote maintenance support system, 'DS4 AR Support®.' Through remote support via this system, the trial operation was successful without the need for engineers from overseas equipment suppliers to enter Korea.
This system is a remote support program that combines augmented reality (AR) and video call technology, allowing senders and receivers to share necessary screens and exchange various information through a dedicated app. Even in poor network environments, call interruptions are significantly reduced, enabling efficient work. Therefore, it is expected to be greatly helpful for remote support in ship manufacturing sites requiring various long-distance communications and for ships underway.
By using this app, the time and cost for various ship maintenance tasks and responding to shipowners' requests can be reduced, leading to considerable cost savings compared to traditional methods. It is also analyzed that it can greatly contribute to productivity improvement by being used for collaboration between production and design within the shipyard, as well as between the shipyard and equipment suppliers.
DSME has been developing a non-face-to-face augmented reality solution since last year in partnership with a domestic specialized company possessing AR core technology to prepare alternatives utilizing untact technology. Currently, all patents and trademarks have been registered, and software upgrade work is underway to add various functions.
