Jeonnam Province Supports 'Restoration Costs' for Farms Damaged by Abnormal Low Temperatures
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) announced on the 10th that it will provide 23.8 billion KRW in damage recovery funds confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs within this month to farms affected by abnormal low temperatures and other damages.
This recovery fund covers damage to 8,237 hectares of fruit trees such as pear, plum, and peach that were in bloom in early April due to abnormal low temperatures, 644 hectares of garlic affected by physiological disorders (bee garlic) caused by high temperatures during the growing period, and 2,707 hectares of forest products such as astringent persimmons. Of the total, 19.6 billion KRW will be allocated to fruit trees and other crops, and 4.2 billion KRW to forest crops.
Farmers will receive both direct support such as pesticide costs and green onion costs (sowing costs for alternative crops) depending on the scale and extent of the damage, as well as indirect support including tuition fees, deferred repayment of agricultural management funds, and living expenses.
The pesticide support unit price is 1.99 million KRW per hectare for fruit trees such as apples and pears, and 1.92 million KRW for vegetables. The living expense support for damages exceeding 50% is 1.19 million KRW based on a family of four.
In particular, support for bee garlic damage reflects the province’s repeated requests to the government to recognize it as an agricultural disaster and provide assistance.
The province plans to support 3.5 billion KRW from its contingency funds to ensure the rapid provision of damage recovery funds.
Kim Kyung-ho, Director of the Agriculture, Livestock and Food Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “We hope that the support for damage recovery funds will help stabilize farm management even a little. Going forward, we will support facilities such as wind fans to prevent low-temperature damage to fruit trees and expand enrollment in crop disaster insurance so that farmers can focus on farming with peace of mind.”
