Jeonnam Province Implements Comprehensive Heatwave Response Measures in Agriculture and Livestock Sector
Operation of Agricultural Disaster Countermeasure Situation Room Until September
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province (Governor Kim Young-rok) announced on the 9th that it will operate the ‘Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures Situation Room’ until September 30 to implement a ‘Comprehensive Heatwave Response Plan for the Agriculture and Livestock Sector’ in response to forecasts that the number of heatwave days this summer will be more than double the average.
Accordingly, under the overall supervision of the Director of the Agriculture, Livestock and Food Bureau, the province has organized a total of five teams (16 members)?the General Team, Initial Response Team, Food and Horticulture Team, Livestock Team, and Water Facilities Team?and will maintain an emergency communication system with cities, counties, and related organizations, disseminate measures, and manage the overall situation.
First, preventing casualties among farmers who frequently engage in outdoor farming activities will be prioritized. During heatwave warnings, behavioral guidelines will be provided via text messages, and work must be stopped during the hottest hours from 12 PM to 5 PM.
For unavoidable work, workers must wear vests equipped with ice packs and must not work alone.
The use of cooling shelters through practicing social distancing in daily life will also be actively encouraged.
To prevent wilting and death damage to field crops such as chili peppers and sesame, as well as facility horticultural crops, water will be continuously supplied to nearby streams of farmland, and simple pumping stations will be installed to enable frequent sprinkling with water.
For fruit trees, installation of fans, fine sprinkling, and periodic watering must be carried out to prevent sunburn and drying symptoms.
Additionally, to prevent livestock deaths, the province will operate on-site technical support teams for heatwave prevention in cities and counties, provide support for sprinkling water on livestock barn roofs using fire trucks during heatwave warnings, and conduct publicity to prevent barn fires.
In particular, Jeonnam Province is supporting 1 billion KRW for the purchase of facilities and equipment such as large ventilation fans to prevent heat damage to livestock, and has secured 1.4 billion KRW to support high-temperature stress relief agents to prevent livestock deaths during the peak heatwave months of July and August.
Furthermore, 6 billion KRW is being invested in livestock disaster insurance premiums to do its best in preventive support.
