Gwangjin-gu Operates 'Jaturi Garden Donation Day' Every Thursday
Participants Harvest Crops Grown in Jaturi Garden, Share and Donate... Contributing to Community Culture by Practicing Sharing with Neighbors in Need
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Seon-gap) operates the ‘Jaturi Garden Donation Day’ to allow participants of the Jaturi Garden to share the crops they have grown with neighbors in need.
The ‘Jaturi Garden Donation Day’ is held every Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at four Jaturi Garden locations in Gwangjin-gu from the 4th of this month through November.
Since April, the district has been operating Jaturi Gardens in Gwangjang-dong, Achasan, Jungnangcheon, and Gwangnaru, with a total of 390 plots covering 5,400㎡, cultivating crops such as lettuce, eggplant, and chili peppers.
Residents who individually apply to cultivate a garden can voluntarily participate in donations, while gardens operated by organizations donate 50% of their harvest to neighbors in need according to the lease conditions.
Residents participating in sharing the harvest can remove soil from the crops harvested at the Jaturi Garden and package them by type in bags. Afterwards, the Gwangjin Food Bank visits the Jaturi Garden to collect the vegetables directly and distributes them to vulnerable groups in the area on the same day.
Last year, the Jaturi Garden donation was conducted a total of 14 times. Over 1,360 kg of about 20 types of crops including lettuce, cabbage, radish, chili peppers, pumpkin, tomato, and peanuts, as well as 113 kg of dried shiitake mushrooms harvested from the district-managed mushroom farm and 20 kg of natural honey collected from the beekeeping farm in Gwangjang-dong, were donated to neighbors in need.

District Mayor Kim Seon-gap said, “By sharing the harvests grown with sweat by the district’s urban farmers with neighbors in need, we expect to practice neighborly love and contribute to the spread of community culture,” and added, “We hope more residents will participate in sharing through urban agriculture.”
