Iksan City Smiles Broadly at Unexpectedly Warm Response to Local Currency 'Dairo-um'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Gom In-hyung] Iksan City is beaming with joy as the number of subscribers to the local currency ‘Iksan Dairo-um’ has surpassed 58,000, and the total issuance amount has exceeded 50 billion won.
According to the city on the 5th, ‘Iksan Dairo-um’ was launched on January 17 with an initial issuance target of 10 billion won to promote local capital circulation and revitalize the local commercial district.
It is the nation’s first complex-type disaster basic income system, providing universal welfare by giving 100,000 won in disaster basic income to all citizens, and from April to June, implemented a consumption promotion system that refunds 10% of the amount spent using ‘Iksan Dairo-um’ as an economic stimulus.
As a result, the issuance amount increased more than fourfold after the implementation of the consumption promotion system (payback), and on the 1st, 2.5 billion won was issued in a single day. The payment amount has increased about five times compared to the launch, receiving explosive response from citizens.
Moreover, small business owners are voluntarily acting as local currency evangelists by requesting additional Dairo-um promotional stickers from the city to welcome customers using ‘Dairo-um’ and attaching self-made banners at store entrances.
The city judges that ‘Iksan Dairo-um’ has stabilized, and is actively considering raising the issuance target from the original 60 billion won and extending the 10% incentive support until the second half of the year.
