Samsung and LG Accelerate Digital Transformation... Strengthening Future Competitiveness
[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] As the COVID-19 pandemic has expanded the untact (contactless) trend across society, companies' digital transformation (DT) is accelerating. This is interpreted as a strategy to optimize production and management activities using digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and cloud computing to strengthen future competitiveness.
According to the electronics industry on the 30th, Samsung will conduct the Samsung Aptitude Test (GSAT) for first-half new employee recruitment online for the first time ever over two days from the 30th to the 31st. Due to the prolonged impact of COVID-19, it is difficult for tens of thousands of examinees nationwide to take the test offline as before.
To prepare for any emergencies during the exam, Samsung held an online preliminary gathering for examinees over two days from the 26th to 27th and conducted mock tests to prevent cheating for internal employees. Examinees must use their smartphones to show their computer monitor screen, face, mouse, and hands, while supervisors monitor the examinees remotely.
Earlier, Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) division also held a management briefing session last month in a non-face-to-face manner. Unlike before, the briefing was replaced by streaming the video to employees.
Samsung is also strengthening technology development. The company recently unveiled a next-generation mobile security chip to be released in the third quarter of this year. The product, equipped with proprietary security software, received the highest level of data security certification among mobile device security chips under the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation. When the product is embedded in smart devices, manufacturers can apply security functions immediately without developing separate software, which shortens development time.
LG Group is also actively strengthening its digital transformation. On the 28th, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo visited LG Science Park in Magok to discuss digital transformation and AI promotion strategies. Chairman Koo emphasized digital innovation at the meeting, stating, "Doing nothing and not taking bold challenges can be considered failures," urging the enhancement of capabilities.
LG Electronics, LG Chem, and others have established dedicated digital transformation teams and are preparing to convert over 90% of their IT systems to the cloud, as well as adopting work support robots and software standards.
