Samsung Heavy, World's First Smart Shuttle Tanker Certified by ClassNK Emerges
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Samsung Heavy Industries announced on the 28th that it has successfully delivered the 150,000-ton class shuttle tanker "Eagle Petrolina," built at its Geoje shipyard, to the Singaporean shipping company AET Tankers.
The Eagle Petrolina is equipped with SVESSEL, a smart ship solution developed independently by Samsung Heavy Industries, and is the world's first smart ship officially certified by DNV GL, the Norwegian-German classification society, as a shuttle tanker.
DNV GL is a global certification body that, in November 2018, newly defined the technical requirements for the latest smart ships and grants the "Smart Ship Technology Certification (CG-0508 SMARTSHIP DESCRIPTIVE NOTATION)" only to vessels that pass a rigorous evaluation.
Through SVESSEL, the Eagle Petrolina can receive information such as optimal navigation routes for fuel efficiency, engine output, and ship trim. It also allows real-time monitoring of operational data such as fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, enabling compliance with environmental regulations and economical operation.
Additionally, the ship's operational information can be checked in real time from the onshore control center, making navigation support and management easier not only for the vessel itself but also for the fleet, which is expected to reduce operating costs.
Vidar Dolonen, CEO of DNV GL Korea, stated, "The latest smart ship technology being developed with Samsung Heavy Industries will provide shipping companies with technological safety while offering the most economical solution to increasingly strict environmental regulations and the shortage of seafarers."
