IPTV-Cable TV "Simultaneous VOD Release with Movie Premiere... First Ever Joint Service"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] IPTV and cable TV are jointly launching VOD services simultaneously with theatrical releases to support the movie industry struggling due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
KT, SK Broadband, LG Uplus, the three IPTV providers, and Homechoice, which manages cable TV VOD services, announced on the 21st that they will provide VOD services on the same day as theatrical releases so that customers who cannot visit theaters due to COVID-19 can comfortably watch new movies at home. Starting with the action movie 'Bloodshot' on this day, 'Gukdogeukjang' will be released on the 29th, and 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' on June 10.
This is the first time IPTV and cable TV have jointly procured and serviced VOD. This is expected to be welcome news not only for the movie industry facing a crisis due to postponed or canceled theatrical releases but also for audiences thirsty for new films.
Both sides plan to continue providing movies that hesitate to have theatrical releases due to the COVID-19 situation as VOD services simultaneously with theatrical releases through ongoing consultations with domestic and international distributors.
