KT Achieves 5G Data Transmission Success Using Indigenous Quantum Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] KT has succeeded in a field test of encrypting 5G data using quantum cryptography communication technology before transmission.
On the 11th, KT announced that it applied its self-developed 'Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system' and domestically produced 'encryption equipment' developed by a small and medium-sized enterprise to the 5G network actually used by customers in some areas of Gyeonggi-do. The quantum key distribution system is a system that supplies 'encryption keys' made by quantum to the communication network for data encryption.
KT explained that the quantum cryptography communication field has been developed and verified mainly by overseas manufacturers, and it is significant that Korea succeeded in commercialization verification with standards made in Korea and technologies that follow them. KT had its open-layer architecture and detailed technical requirements approved as international standards in October 2019 and May 2020, respectively.
With this successful demonstration, KT said it can provide a higher level of security service to customers using the KT network, and it is expected that KT's quantum cryptography technologies secured through research so far will become next-generation security solutions active in key national sectors such as public, defense, and finance.
