Gwanak-gu Strengthens Mosquito Larvae Control and Provides Lantern Rental Service to Prevent Infectious Diseases
Contribution to Early Prevention of Mosquito-Borne Infectious Diseases by Injecting Eco-Friendly Larvicide into Residential Septic Tanks... Proactive and Active Quarantine Activities Including Rental Service of Yu-mun Lanterns and Operation of Mobile Quarantine Teams
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is starting intensive mosquito larva control and disinfection activities to reduce the mosquito population and prevent mosquito-borne infectious diseases.
This measure is taken as the weather begins to warm up, leading to active hatching and breeding of sanitary pests such as mosquitoes and flies.
The control work will be carried out by spraying eco-friendly larvicide on approximately 25,000 septic tanks in residential buildings within the district.
The spraying method involves residents directly applying the mosquito larvicide (10g) distributed by the district office into the toilet connected to the septic tank in each household, with only one toilet per residential building needing treatment.
A district official stated, “Controlling one mosquito larva is equivalent to eliminating about 500 adult mosquitoes, so applying larvicide at each household can prevent initial egg laying and achieve great effects at low cost.”
In addition, the district conducts various disinfection activities throughout the year. A disinfection task force composed of 12 members in 3 teams is focusing on disinfecting multi-use facilities such as bus stops to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Especially, the system processes disinfection requests within 24 hours, receiving positive responses from residents. The district also promotes and encourages thorough disinfection at about 900 mandatory disinfection facilities to prevent infectious diseases and control mosquitoes.
Furthermore, starting this year, the district is implementing a 'UV light rental project' for mosquito collection. This project installs UV lights in houses located in areas with frequent mosquito complaints to collect and eliminate mosquitoes, reducing residents’ inconvenience and creating a safe environment from major infectious diseases such as malaria.
Residents wishing to use the UV light rental service must visit the Gwanak-gu Public Health Center Infectious Disease Control Team with their ID to apply. Since the quantity is limited to 50 units, it is recommended to inquire with the Infectious Disease Control Team before visiting.
