Gwangju Police Make Every Effort in 'Promotional Activities' to Eradicate Voice Phishing
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Police are conducting multifaceted promotional activities to eradicate telephone financial fraud (voice phishing).
The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency (Chief Choi Gwanho) announced on the 7th that it held a security strategy meeting to respond to telephone financial fraud the day before, discussed the progress so far, and decided to implement stronger countermeasures.
This follows the launch of a telephone financial fraud response task force (TF) involving all departments on the 6th of last month to prevent telephone financial fraud.
Considering the nature of telephone financial fraud crimes, where it is difficult to recover the damages once they occur, customized promotional content was created and distributed so that citizens can recognize the crime in advance and prevent damage.
Based on an analysis of recent fraud methods used in victim cases, promotional videos, 50,000 leaflets, and 1,500 posters were produced to inform citizens that anyone can be a target of such crimes.
In cooperation with related organizations such as Gwangju Metropolitan City, the promotional videos were broadcast through the Gwangju Small Business Association members (115,000 people) who have high loan demand, two large electronic billboards, 64 bus information systems, internal monitors in elevators of 37,000 apartment units (1,000 monitors), CMB Gwangju Broadcasting, and road electronic signboards.
Recently, voice phishing has shifted from transferring money to fake accounts to a so-called face-to-face extortion type, where victims are instructed to withdraw cash from banks and hand it over directly.
Therefore, when a person at risk of victimization requests cash withdrawal or loans at a bank, bank employees provide a final caution notice summarizing the latest crime methods produced by the police, urging them to read it carefully.
Additionally, it was highlighted that recruitment ads disguised as high-paying part-time jobs on internet job advertisement sites are frequently used to recruit lower-level criminals such as collectors, and these ads can turn into voice phishing victim money collectors.

Choi Gwanho, Chief of the Gwangju Police Agency, said, “If all departments of the Gwangju Police continue to focus their capabilities on telephone financial fraud as they are now, we expect preventive effects to appear,” and added, “We must also make every effort to protect and support victims so that they can return to their daily lives after suffering damage.”
