Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Establishes Measures Including University Admission Support Plans
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has established college admission support measures and other academic advancement plans in accordance with the 2022 academic year (targeting current high school sophomores) university admission plan announced by the Korea Council for University Education on the 30th of last month.
According to the Gwangju Office of Education on the 7th, the Ministry of Education announced measures to strengthen fairness in the college admission system on November 28th last year.
They recommended expanding the regular admission (CSAT-based) quota to 40% by the 2023 academic year for 16 universities in the Seoul area and encouraged early achievement in the 2022 academic year. In the 2022 academic year university admission plan announced by the Korea Council for University Education, among the 16 Seoul-area universities, 9 universities reflect 40% or more in regular admissions, and 7 universities reflect 30% or more.
The most notable feature of this announcement is the change in the selection ratio by admission type compared to the 2021 academic year. The regular admission (CSAT-based) ratio increased by 8.25% from 29.65% to 37.90%, while the comprehensive student record admission ratio decreased by 9.41% from 45.46% to 36.05%.
In the 2022 academic year college admissions, the regular admission (CSAT-based) type holds the largest share. Additionally, the student record-based admission increased by 3.38% from 7.99% to 11.36%, the essay admission decreased by 1.99% from 10.49% to 8.50%, and the practical skills admission decreased by 0.55% from 4.85% to 4.30%.
Due to the expansion of regular admissions and the increase in the student record-based selection ratio in early admissions for the 2022 academic year, there is a risk that preparation for the comprehensive student record admission may be neglected.
However, the selection ratio for comprehensive student record admission still holds a high proportion at 36.05% among the 16 Seoul-area universities. Therefore, for the 2022 academic year college admissions, it is important not to choose between early and regular admissions but to prepare for both in a balanced manner. The most effective way to prepare for both comprehensive student record admission and regular admission is to actively participate in various school educational activities based on curricular learning.
Accordingly, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education has decided to establish and implement balanced academic advancement guidance measures for early and regular admissions in response to the 2022 academic year admission changes (expansion of regular admissions).
High school academic guidance measures include ▲development and distribution of high school career and academic advancement materials (the ‘Bitgoeul Daero’ academic series) ▲supplementary distribution of high school student academic guidance support videos ▲provision of customized career and academic advancement support sites and admission portal lists ▲real-time counseling operation via online band for career and academic counseling (Bitgoeul Dream Tree) ▲telephone counseling and regular face-to-face counseling for parents of 3rd-year high school students ▲customized college admission explanation sessions for teachers, students, and parents.
Early admission support measures include ▲distribution of early admission counseling programs analyzing college admission results (Bitgoeul Olligo) ▲operation of visiting high school support consulting (Bitgoeul Platform) ▲operation of real-time career and academic counseling online band for early admission preparation (Bitgoeul Dream Tree) ▲field support for early admission preparation through the Gwangju Career and Academic Advancement Support Group (counseling, comprehensive student record support, etc.) ▲operation of customized intensive counseling weeks for early admission preparation ▲distribution of university-specific support materials for early admission (admission results, placement tables, etc.) ▲holding the Gwangju Career and Academic Advancement Fair for early admission preparation ▲support for school record management (consulting by student record practical support group) ▲sharing early admission support strategies through the Gwangju Academic Affairs Directors Council.
Regular admission support measures include ▲providing admission roadmaps and academic support materials up to the CSAT day ▲operation of real-time career and academic counseling online band for regular admission preparation (Bitgoeul Dream Tree) ▲field support for regular admission preparation through the Gwangju Career and Academic Advancement Support Group (counseling, support strategies, etc.) ▲operation of customized intensive counseling weeks for regular admission preparation ▲provision of regular admission counseling programs (Bitgoeul Olligo, Korea Council for University Education counseling program) ▲distribution of university-specific support materials for regular admission (admission results, placement tables, etc.) ▲holding analysis explanation sessions for provisional and actual CSAT scoring (for teachers and parents) ▲sharing regular admission support strategies through the Gwangju Academic Affairs Directors Council.
