[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] On the 29th, a fire broke out at a logistics warehouse construction site in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, resulting in the deaths of 25 workers. There are a total of 7 injured, including 1 critically injured person.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters confirmed that 78 people from 9 companies were working at the site during the fire. The sudden increase in the number of fatalities is due to the fire subsiding and the full-scale search for victims beginning. There is a possibility that more casualties will be added as additional searches continue.
The fire authorities believe that an explosion occurred in the basement of the warehouse under construction, after which the fire spread. A fire official stated, "Considering that the victims appear to have been unable to evacuate at all, it is presumed that there was an unexplained explosion," adding, "The fire seems to have spread very quickly, possibly related to work involving flammable materials such as urethane foam."
