NSSC Forms Radiation Safety Working Group to "Establish Inter-Agency Collaboration System"
Public Concern Over Radiation Safety Grows Due to Radon Bed Incident... "Minimize Confusion"
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) announced on the 29th that it will establish a Radiation Safety Working Council.
The NSSC plans to form the working council under the Nuclear Safety Policy Council, which was launched in 2014. The chair of the Policy Council is Chairman Eom Jaesik of the NSSC, and its members are directors from various government ministries.
The working council will be chaired by Kim Sungkyu, Director of the NSSC Radiation Disaster Prevention Bureau, and will include mid-level officials responsible for radiation-related tasks from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
To identify and review specialized and timely issues, an advisory group composed of experts from related fields will also be operated alongside the council.
Social interest in radiation safety has increased due to incidents such as the radon bed case, detection of radioactive substances in daily necessities, and radiation exposure among airline crew members.
However, radiation-related duties were scattered across different ministries. Therefore, the NSSC judged that it is necessary to find response measures to minimize public confusion through inter-ministerial collaboration.
The NSSC announced that through the working council, it plans to minimize blind spots between ministries in the field of radiation safety and strengthen the establishment of a cross-ministerial cooperation and coordination system.
Through the working council, the NSSC will provide technical support to each ministry to enhance the consistency of individually managed radiation safety technical standards, measurement, and management procedures.
It also plans to continuously identify inter-ministerial collaboration and coordination tasks to streamline radiation safety regulations.
