Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Greatly Increases Circulating Librarians for Small Libraries
Dispatched to 944 Locations Nationwide "Library Service Activation & Reading Culture Expansion"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 29th that it will hire 269 circulating librarians to strengthen the operation of small libraries and dispatch them to 944 locations nationwide.
Circulating librarians are staff responsible for tasks such as operating reading culture programs, managing books, and lending. They were introduced in 2010, with about fifty selected each year. Last year, fifty-five circulating librarians were dispatched. This was far from enough to operate 6,672 small libraries (as of December last year). In fact, 2,463 locations (36.9%) were operated solely by volunteers without staff.
