Seongnam City to Collect Household Waste During Daytime Starting July
[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province will collect household waste during the daytime starting in July. The current collection time is from 8 PM to 5 AM the next day.
On the 29th, Seongnam City announced that it will change the working hours for sanitation workers employed by cleaning contractors to collect household waste (hereafter referred to as garbage) from 5 AM to 2 PM.
This measure aims to eliminate concerns related to sanitation workers’ poor visibility and risk of safety accidents during nighttime garbage collection, as well as issues of sleep deprivation and accumulated fatigue, thereby improving their working environment.
The target group includes approximately 580 sanitation workers belonging to 16 cleaning contractors in Seongnam City who currently perform garbage collection at night.
The city decided to change the garbage collection hours by reflecting the results of surveys conducted with sanitation workers and local residents, as well as opinions from the city council, during last year’s "Study on the Transition of Household Waste Collection and Transportation to Daytime."
Before the change is implemented, a pilot program for daytime garbage collection will be conducted from June 1 to the end of June.
This is to identify and address points for improvement during the collection process, such as changes in the time required per task due to increased travel time of garbage collection vehicles during rush hours, and whether additional personnel and equipment are needed for narrow residential alleys.
Civilians should continue to put out their garbage after sunset as usual, regardless of the change in collection time.
